DSCSA software for pharmacies: frequently asked questions

Do small pharmacies need DSCSA software right now?

Not necessarily for the electronic, package-level requirements, which are exempt for small dispensers until November 27, 2027. You still need a reliable way to receive and keep transaction information and statements for six years, check trading partners and handle suspect product. Some pharmacies use a wholesaler portal or paper/PDF records for this today; others start with software early.

What should DSCSA software for pharmacies do by November 2027?

Typically: receive suppliers' EPCIS transaction data, store it for at least six years, let you retrieve it quickly on request, check trading partner authorization, verify product identifiers (often via VRS) for suspect product or saleable returns, and manage exceptions. See the comparison table.

How much does DSCSA software cost for a pharmacy?

Where vendors publish prices, the table lists them: for example a free single-location plan with limits, and monthly plans in roughly the $29 to $99 range per pharmacy. Several vendors do not publish prices. Always confirm current pricing with the vendor.

Which DSCSA software is best?

We do not rank products. The right choice depends on your pharmacy system, your wholesalers, how many stores you run and how much hands-on help you want. The table lists stated features alphabetically so you can compare.

Does my pharmacy management system include DSCSA?

Some pharmacy-system makers partner with DSCSA vendors. For example, RedSail Technologies (BestRx, PioneerRx, PrimeRx, NRx) lists LSPedia and InfiniTrak as partners, with published integrated and non-integrated monthly prices. Ask your system vendor.

Is EPCIS required for small pharmacies?

The requirement to exchange transaction information in a secure, interoperable, electronic manner per FDA's standards (in practice, EPCIS) is one of the requirements small dispensers are exempt from until November 27, 2027.
